Statue Square was a reclaimed land which built for the celebration of Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee in 1887. Mr Paul Chater had been appointed chairman of Jubilee Committee and in 1897 the Queen's Diamond Jubilee a grand ceremony of unveiling of the new statue of Queen Victoria installed right in the middle of most precious and central part of city, under a monumental stone canopy in the form of an imperial crown. On this pic shows the grand ceremony and the Hong Kong Club building nears completion.
WeeKit Ong says:
During Japanese occupation, all the statues were shipped to Japan and the square was left empty. After the war, the United Kingdom Liaison Mission in Tokyo reported the presence of a statue of Queen Victoria dumped on the Osaka army arsenal's scrap-heap together with "a bronze statue of a man in a frock coat, bare headed, domed forehead and moustache" and "a pair of bronze lions, one with its mouth open. ( almost melted down for scrap )

Jackson and the bank's lions can be seen in the square today. Queen Victoria was not so lucky. Her monument mouldered away in a garage for eleven years before it was stuck on a pedestal in Causeway Bay's Victoria Park from where she glowers furiously at the traffic.Victoria Park, the largest park on Hong Kong Island, located at the city centre. Victoria Park was opened in October 1957
