Stars of stone(crop)
Stonecrop (Sedum lanceolatum) occurs throughout dry habitats across a wide range of elevations, from the Great Plains to over 4000 m in the Rocky Mountains. Stonecrop has an interesting association with the Rocky Mountain Apollo butterfly (Parnassius phoebus) whose larvae (caterpillars) are dependent on the plant for food. During past glacial periods the two species have moved across the landscape together as climate influenced their ranges, and today exhibit genetic differences among their populations that reflect those past movements.
