Behind the Rocks
Eroded fins and pillars of Navajo Sandstone glow in the golden hour sun with Mounts Mellenthin (12645 ft / 3854 m, left) and Tukuhnikivatz (12482 ft / 3805 m, right) providing the snowy backdrop. Moab sits in the valley between the mountains (La Sal Range) and the line of rocks on the top of the mesa. This area is known as “Behind the Rocks” and is a wilderness study area of the Bureau of Land Management. The view is from Poison Spider Mesa across the Colorado River looking east.
A couple of days after this photo was taken the La Sals received over 2 feet (610 cm) of snow along with winds gusting to 70 mph (112 km/hr) as a "massive winter storm" (as the National Weather Service described it) passed through the area.
