In the Hall of the Canyon Queen
Apologies to Edvard Grieg…
Moment’s Notice walks beneath the towering walls of Buckskin Gulch, considered the longest slot canyon in the known universe. Water and wind have carved a narrow passageway through the Navajo Sandstone 12 miles/ 19 km long, as narrow as 4 feet/ 1.2 m wide, with walls as high as 500 feet/ 150 m. Despite the length and narrowness there is only one spot in the canyon that poses a challenge to hiking, a rock-jam about a mile above the junction with the Paria River. The glow on the far canyon wall is derived from sunlight reflecting off the wall across from it, adding to the warmth of the color.
