Twilight Serenity
The clouds above (l to r) Domínguez, Whale, and Boundary buttes are bathed in color as the sun makes its way toward the eastern horizon, their reflection blurred in the relatively calm waters of Lake Powell. Note the cobbles scattered in the (Navajo) sandstone in the foreground- it’s not surprising to see them next to a large body of water, but they were formed when the Colorado River was at this elevation, 450 feet/ 137 m higher than it would be now without the dam. Not sure how long it takes the river to cut through 450 feet of sandstone, but it took about 5 million years to carve the Grand Canyon.
