Night among the Goblins
The galactic center of the Milky Way starts making its seasonal appearance in the northern hemisphere around mid-February, with the best visibility in May. Here the core has reached its highest in the sky for this date at this location in Goblin Land (an official dark sky site- www.darksky.org). The most dense portion of the galactic center is still to the right of the photo. Jupiter has just risen above the horizon on the far right side, and Altair has just cleared the rock spire of the figure in the middle.
The rock formation in the foreground is called a variety of things, but my favorite is the Chess Pieces, for their resemblance to bishops or pawns, though I think the Three Sisters is more popular.
This is a compilation of 13 shots, one for the light painted foreground (iso 800, 30 seconds) and 12 for the night sky (iso 4000, 15 seconds) compiled using Starry Landscape Stacker.
