Heart of the Beast
A severe thunderstorm bears down on Fredrick Colorado, dropping golf-ball sized hail, high winds, and frequent lightning- it looked like a strobe in the sky. The near-full moon illuminates the slopes of Grassy Top off to the left, and in the distance the lights of Longmont shine. This was a fabulous and frightening storm to watch, building up with ferocity I’ve never seen before. It was triggered by “outflow” of severe storms (similar to a cold front) earlier in the day on the Colorado-Kansas-Nebraska borders. As if the storm wasn’t enough there were a few Perseid meteors streaming overhead as well.
