The Neon Moment

The last bit of sunlight, filtered through a long path of atmosphere, shines on the Windows section of Arches National Park. Rich in red wavelengths the light is particularly brilliant on the sandstones made up of the Carmel Formation (Dewey Bridge member- wavy lines) and Entrada Formation (Slick Rock member). Turret (aka Mudra) Arch is visible in the left center part of the panorama. In the background are the northern (l to r: Horse Mountain, Mount Waas, and Manns Peak) and central (Mount Mellenthin, Mount Peale, and Mt Tukuhnikivatz) portions of the Manti La Sal Mountains.

This is one of my favorite places to take sunset pictures, particularly in the winter when there is snow in the La Sals, and clouds catching color above the mountains. Having snow in Arches is an added bonus- each opportunity is different from the others.
