Desert grassland to alpine tundra in just a few miles (8000 feet (2400 m) of vertical distance)- the La Sal Mountains tower over Adobe Mesa and Mary Jane Canyon. The sheer red cliffs (Wingate Sandstone), glowing red here from warm light of the setting sun, inspired the name for the valley just to the north: Castle Valley.
