John Day River, OR
The John Day River, seen here near the mouth of Rock Creek, about 15 miles above its mouth, is a major tributary of the Columbia, The John Day is 281 miles (452 km) long, and drains an area of 8,000 square miles (20,700 square km). The drainage area is almost as large as that of the Deschutes River a few miles to the west, but on average, the John Day discharges only 1/3 as much water. About half the length of the John Day has been designated as a Wild and Scenic River.
