Deschutes River, OR
This photo of the Deschutes River, one of the major tributaries of the Columbia, was taken about 1 km upstream from its confluence with the Columbia. The Deschutes is 406 km (252 miles) long, and drains an area of 27,200 square km (10,500 square miles), more than 10% of Oregon. Parts of the river are heavily used for whitewater rafting, so much so that rafting has had to be regulated by issuing permits.
