Horse Crippler Cactus In Bloom (Explore!)

Horse Crippler, Devils Head, Devil's Pincushion or Manca Caballo (Echinocactus texensis) -

Spherial-shaped cactus. Flowering in early spring; flowers pink to red orange; fruit a many seeded, red berry.

A frequent species found in the Trans-Pecos, Edwards Plateau, Rio Grande Plains and southern Coastal Prairie. This cactus is regarded as a menace to cattlemen b/c unsuspecting stock animals can be badly injured by the strong thorns. The fruits are edible.
