Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) -

I love these beautifully colored butterflies! I like how, if you cut this shot down the middle you almost have a mirror image of each other.

Widespread and common year round. It frequents fields, roadsides, gardens and occasionally woodland sites, feeding on a wide variety of flowering plants. Females sometimes hover low over the ground for long periods searching for low growing pievines, their larval foodplant. This butterfly was named for the pipevine plant (Aristolochia), its larval foodplant. Pipevine plants contain aristolochic acid, which is ingested by caterpillars. The acid causes butterfly adults and larvae to be distasteful to predators.
