~ Religion, Politics & Rachael Ray (Shake and Bake)
in the shade of a
gnarly juniper tree,
god and the buddhas
are lying on big pillows
of volcanic rock,
looking up at the passing clouds,
their legs hanging
over the edge of the canyon.
down below,
the crooked river
cuts around smith rock
“so, who do you like
for president?” asks god.
“obama … he has buddha-nature,”
answer the three buddhas.
“politics is a tricky business,”
says god,
firing up a lucky strike.
the buddhas smell the sulfur
as god opens
the box of wooden matches;
they hear the sweep
of a match across the striker;
and they see the red phosphorus
flare to life.
“obama can’t win for losing,”
says god, taking a long, deep
drag off the lucky.
“i mean, a year ago,
he wasn’t black enough, remember?”
god asks, rhetorically.
“now, he’s too black,”
he continues.
“you’ve been watching fox news
again, haven’t you, sir,”
say the buddhas, snickering.
“well, rev. wright
is pleasing to me and all,"
says god
"and at least
he’s got some fire in his belly …
but i really thought
clinton was going to win.”
“ah … aren’t you .. you know,
… omniscient?”
ask the buddhas.
“normally, i am,” says god,
“but i was also wrong
about dewey in 1948.”
“by the way," says god,
gore won florida in 2000, just
in case you were wondering.”
“islam has one thing right,”
say the buddhas,
“watch any show on cable television
for more than 30 seconds,
and it will confirm that
western civilization is in decline.”
“except rachael ray,”
says god, dreamily,
“she has buddha-nature.”
