~ Do You Hear it? (The Laughter of Children)

“do you hear it?”

god asks the buddhas

as he gets back in

the front seat

and pulls shut the door

of a bel-air nomad

parked

motor running

beside horsetail falls

in the columbia river gorge

“solid,

like the shutter on a leica,”

says one damp,

shivering buddha

“no, not the door,”

says god

as he looks in the back seat

and sees the three buddhas

still wearing their

bright yellow rain slickers

with matching hats

smiling, god

shakes a lucky strike

out of the pack

from the rolled-up sleeve

of his white t-shirt

and tries to light it

with a match

from the book

he picked up from the

counter at the cafe

the match does not light

and the chevy

smells like wet sulfur

“no divine spark?”

snickers one of the buddhas

the other two buddhas

are shaking,

snickering as well

god takes a sip

of cold coffee

from a styrofoam cup

“i’m trying to make

a point here,” he says

as he conceals his face

"do you hear it?"

it becomes quiet

intermittently

the wiper blades

sweep across the windshield

the buddhas sit listening to

their breaths

the pistons in the engine

& the roar of the water

hitting the glistening rocks

...

time passes

“the laughter of children?”

asks one of the buddhas

in a timid voice

“exactly,” says god
