Stair Hole

Stair Hole from the west, with the "Lulworth Crumple" visible to the left of the picture - an area where once-flat strata of sedimentary rocks from the ocean bed were tilted as continents collided. The crumpling effect is caused by bands of soft shale between bands of harder limestone.

 

"Around 25 million years ago the African tectonic plate collided with the European plate. The huge pressures generated heaved and folded rocks to create the mountain chain we know as the Alps.
