Washington, D.C. police push an abandoned car off of Wisconsin Avenue NW in Georgetown during an attempt to shut down the government by Mayday protesters May 3, 1971.

“Because of ‘destructive and lawless mass actions’ steps will be taken to insure ‘reasonable safety and security’ of students and faculty.” No one except people who live there will be admitted to dormitories. Visitors were no longer welcome after noon and must leave.”—George Washington University President Lloyd Elliott, The Evening Star, 5/4/1971.

The Mayday Tribe, a loose knit group of individuals, collectives and affinity groups, organized an attempt to shut down the U.S. government in Washington, D.C. in protest of the continued war in Indochina May 3-5, 1971 through the use of non violence civil disobedience.
