Freegold North 24

The exchange yards at the Freegold North mine near Welkom on 5 September 1992.

The locomotive is class 24 no 3688 hired from Spoornet and the only member of the class that was ever used in industrial service.

She was an ex Kroonstad prestige locomotive. Under the covering of mine grime you can still see her brass cylinder covers, boiler bands, smoke box nuts and still carrying her old style headlight and nameplates on her tender. Reminders of a more prestigious existence in the past.
