303-Charing Cross Road, Astoria Cinema 1935
This year, 2012, photographer Wolf Suschitzky will celebrate his 100th birthday. Here's one of his great pictures taken in the Charing Cross Road, one of many famous shots that he took of this street in the 1930's. The location is Sutton Street, outside the Astoria (then a cinema), looking to St Giles Circus on a wet evening in 1935. Figures obscure the cinema poster, so it's difficult to say what film was showing at this time. The newspaper seller will probably do good business bearing in mind the latest news of "London explosion", although I don't know exactly what that refers to - maybe someone has more info on this?
Suschitzky has had an interesting life in photography and film making - more details are here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfgang_Suschitzky And you can see more of his brilliant photos here smashingpicture.com/old-photography-wolf-suschitzky/
