State Theatre, Traverse City, MI

The State Theatre in Traverse City originally opened in 1916 as the Lyric Theater, which was rebuilt in 1923 and again in 1949 after two fires did heavy damage to the structure. The current theater name and design, with its shiny red paneled facade and flashy marquee, dates to the 1949 reopening and rebranding of the theater, which was a first-run movie theater until 1996, when it was closed in favor of a newer cineplex out at the Grand Traverse Mall. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the local community, it was reopened in 2007, and is now once again a showy downtown landmark and activity anchor, home to the annual Traverse City Film Festival, once again screening first-run films and independent films alike, and has been rated as one of the best movie theaters in the United States.
