Die Wehlener Sonnenuhr in den Rebhängen

Wehlener solur (er)

Mere end bare historiske ure!

The Wehlener Sundial (s)

More than just historical timepieces!

There are many beautiful and well-known sundials in the Moselle vineyards. Some of them date from the 17th century. The best known is probably the Wehlener sundial, which sits proudly on the sunny vineyard slope opposite the wine village. It was built in 1842 by the vineyard owner Jodocus Prüm. Like all old sundials, it shows the true local time , that is, when the sun has reached its highest point above Wehlen, the hand shadow falls on the twelve. Central European Time (CET), which was only introduced in 1893, differs here by 32 minutes at the 7th degree of longitude. The sundial is about half an hour behind. Around 1900 the location name "Wehlener Sonnenuhr" was introduced for the first-class wine that matures on the steep slope of the sundial.

Wehlen does not want to rest on the fame of the famous vineyard sundial. Wehlen has the ambition to become a site of 100 sundials . There are now over 70 other sundials in the village. Uwe Preus who live in the town has made 55 of them.
