26 July 1860
These are the opening pages of a manuscript read by David Mahon—my grandmother's grandfather—to his reading society in Raloo Parish, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, 26 July 1860. With rolling thunder eloquence, he discusses books, religion, politics, and foreign affairs--revealing a mature, open-hearted tolerance for the less fortunate, and harsh judgement against those who abuse power. Quite an amazing and admirable work, I think.
This abridged version takes 20 minutes to read aloud:

I've added formatting not present in the original to indicate verses of Irish ballads quoted from books that may well have been familiar to his audience.
Hope you enjoy it!
