Paved Paradise
Paradise Pond in Port Aransas--the only freshwater wetland on Mustang Island--has apparently been a great birding site, and has an appealing philanthropic back story. The chalkboard recorded a couple dozen species sighted there the day before, but in the short the short time we spent there we only saw this pair of redhead ducks. The whole site is about the size of a residential lot, with half a dozen parking places in the front and a circuitous path back to the boardwalk along the pond. Maybe there used to be a back fence, but now the view past the pond is a construction site. One wonders whether the pond will remain appealing to the birds after the apartment complex or mall or factory goes in.
