Clay Mills Junction
Clay Mills Junction box was opened by the Midland railway in September 1899.
Originally it contained a 20 lever tumbler frame, later extended to 22 levers.
With the advent of the Derby Power Scheme in 1969 the box became a 'Shunting Frame' and just retained control of the level crossing gates and slots on Derby signals DY181, 183 and 184. For this limited role the lever frame was shortened to just 6 levers.
Barriers replaced the gates from December 12th 1976, whilst in 1985 the lever frame was dispensed with altogether and replaced by two switches.
The crossing was converted to CCTV operation from derby PSB from 27th September 1987 and Clay Mills was finally abolished.
In this 1984 view 47509 'Albion' speeds by with the afternoon Poole - Newcastle (1E34).
