Mount Pleasant: Patriots Point - U.S. Cold War Submarine Memorial

The U.S. Cold War Submarine Memorial, a tribute to the dedicated men who served in our naval submarines during the Cold War from 1947 to 1989, was dedicated at Patriots Point on December 6, 2002. The memorial is comprised of a a full-sized replica of a Benjamin Franklin Class Fleet Ballistic Missile submarine, incorporating the actual sail and rudder of the USS LEWIS AND CLARK SSBN 644, and seven educational stations located at intervals along the surrounding plaza.

The Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, located at Patriots Point on the Charleston Harbor, was first opened in 1975 with three museum ships, the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, the destroyer USS Laffey, and the submarine USS Clamagore. Over the years, it has continued to expand with the Cold War Submarine Memorial, a replica of a Vietnam Support Base, and the museum of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. It also serves as an embarkation point for Fort Sumter tour boats. On September 2, 2003, the Yorktown served as the backdrop for the formal announcement of Senator John Kerry's candidacy as he sought, and ultimately won, the Democratic nomination for President of the United States for the 2004 election.
