Cambridge - Harvard Square

The Harvard/MIT Cooperative Society, or The Coop, was founded in 1882 by a group of Harvard students, as a cooperative which would provide the academic and professional community with a place to buy merchandise at competitive prices and that would also distribute the store-earned profits among its members. In the beginning, the Coop was simply a place to buy books, school supplies and coal and wood for those cold Cambridge winters. In 1916, when MIT moved from Boston to Cambridge, The Coop was invited and has been on the MIT campus ever since. Only students, faculty, alumni and employees of MIT, Harvard, Radcliffe College, Wheelock College, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the personnel of the hospitals affiliated with the Harvard Medical School are eligible to join. The Coop is managed by Barnes & Noble.
