NYC - MoMA - Andreas Gursky's Bahrain I

Bahrain I, 2005

Chromogenic color print, 9' 10 7/8" x 7' 2 1/2" (301.9 x 219.7)

Andreas Gursky, German, born 1955

Gursky is from a generation of photographers who came to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s by challenging the primacy of painting through the scale and grandeur of their work. He takes full advantage of the possibilities of digital manipulation in building his images. Here we see a racetrack winding through a desert landscape in Bahrain.

Andreas Gursky's Bahrain I was on display in the special exhibition, Multiplex: Directions in Art, 1970 to Now from November 21, 2007

Acquired in honor of Robert B. Menschel through the generosity of Agnes Gund, Henry and Marie-Josée Kravis, Ronald S. and Jo Carole Lauder, and the Speyer Family Foundation.
