Jessie Bartlett-Davis.

An 1890 cabinet card #325 by Newsboy of New York featuring the contralto Jessie Bartlett-Davis as Alan a'Dale, the part she created, in the opera 'Robin Hood' by Reginald De Koven [Connecticut 1895 - Chicago 1920]. The opera premièred at the Chicago Opera House on 9th June 1890. When the opera was given in London it was under the title of' 'Maid Marian'.

 

Jessie Bartlett was born near Morris, Grundy County, Illinois in 1860 and died on 14th May 1905 in Chicago.

 

She was credited with having a very fine voice and being an exceptional actress ~ which might explain her very, very wide repertoire.

 

In July 1879 she had made her debut in the opera H.M.S. Pinafore, in the role of Mrs Cripps "Little Buttercup", for the Chicago Church Choir Company. This was 6 months before the first official D'Oyly Carte US production. She became very famous as 'Buttercup'

 

She then made her debut in grand opera in New York City with Adelina Patti and the Mapleson Opera Company. Adelina Patti sang Marguerite and Jessie Bartlett Davis sang Siebel. She also snag in numerous other operas including - The Huguenots; Martha; Il Trovatore etc. She made her last operatic appearance in 1904.

 

During 1901 she turned to vaudeville where she supposedly earned $1,000 per week.
