15th Sept 1942.

 

"Roaring with flame and dead in the water the torpedoed USS Wasp sinks in the wide seas south of the Solomons. Tiny silhouetted figures on the flight deck, the last men leave her"

 

After supporting the invasion of Guadalcanal, Wasp was sunk by Japanese submarine I-19 on 15 September 1942.
