The photo above is of Reri Grist in ‘The Silent Woman’ [Die schweigsame Frau] by Richard Strauss.
Soprano Reri Grist was born in New York in 1932 and grew up in a housing project in Spanish Harlem, but her West Indian immigrant parents encouraged her to study dance and theatre.
She made her début as 'Cindy Lou' in Carmen Jones in 1957 and in the same year she created the role of 'Consuela' in Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story.
Her opera début came in 1959 as 'Blondchen' in Die Entfuhrung at Santa Fé Opera and her European debut was in 1960 as the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte.
She made her Covent Garden début during 1962 and her Metropolitan début in 1966.
She ended her stage career in Amsterdam in 1991, in Neither, a one-woman opera by Morton Feldman, to a text by Samuel Beckett.
Reri Grist – a beautiful person with a beautiful voice and personality.
