C. H. Workman:

C. H. [Charles Herbert] Workman was born in Bootle, Lancashire on 5th May 1873 and died on 1st May 1923 on board ship off Hong Kong.
Workman was with D'Oyly Carte from 1894 to 1909 and sang numerous roles, leading and otherwise. He created the Role of Ben Hashbaz in Gilbert and Sullivan's final opera 'The Grand Duke' in the world première at the Savoy Theatre on 7th March 1896.
He was extremely thought of by critics and audience a like but although asked to return to the company he declined.
In 1923 Workman and his wife were on a Gilbert and Sullivan tour of India and the far east - she died in India in February and he died onboard ship in May.
