Parsifal - world première:

Soprano Pauline Cramer as the 'Grail Bearer' in the world première of Wagner's opera Parsifal at the 1882 Bayreuth Festival - 26th July conducted by Hermann Levi.

 

The photograph was taken on the actual set which was designed by Paul von Joukowsky and is one of the original portrait records of the costumes by the court photographer.

 

Wagner actually called Parsifal 'ein Bühnenweihfestspiel' ~ a festival play for the consecration of the stage, rather than an 'opera' and especially chose Cramer for the role of the bearer of the Holy Grail.

 

She born in Munich, Germany c1858 and studied at the Munich Conservatoire.

 

She sang in a concert at Crystal Palace during May and Oct 1885 and again during April 1886

 

During 1886 she took part in Wagner concerts at St. James's Hall and the following year sang in the English première of Schumann's only opera 'Genoveva' at the same venue.

 

On 15th Nov 1886 at the Royal Albert Hall - the first London performance of Sullivan's cantata the 'Golden Legend' was preceded by a performance of Ferdinand Hiller's 'A song of victory' for soprano solo, chorus and orchestra - Pauline Cramer sang the solo.

 

At the Portman Rooms, Baker Street, London on 28th & 31st Jan & 4th Feb 1889 a recital of Tristan and Isolde was presented by Mr Carl Armbruster with Miss Pauline Cramer, Miss Margaret Hoare, Mr William Nicholl, Mr Wilfred Cunliffe, Mr B. H. Grove and Mr Henry Phillips.

 

The New York Times of 1st Oct 1900 announced the arrival in USA of Carl Armbruster a personal friend of Richard Wagner and soprano Miss Pauline Cramer a pupil of Wagner to lecture on 'The Life and works of Wagner'

 

The Boston Evening Transcript 2nd Nov 1901 reported on the 6th lecture given at the Lowell Institute by Armbruster and Cramer on the subject of the songs of Brahms of which Cramer sang nine.

 

The Indianapolis Journal reported that Cramer was in Indianapolis taking part in Wagner lectures and recitals during Jan 1902.

 

On Jan 22nd & 26th Feb 1st & 6th 1907 Cramer sang the role of Gerhilde in Wagner's opera Die Walküre at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.

 

During Jan and July 1909 Cramer made a total of 7 recordings for the Gramophone Co. at City Road, London.
