These concerts were founded by musical impresario Robert Newman [1858-1926] and the first "Promenade Concert" took place on Saturday 10th August 1895 with Henry Wood conducting his new "Queen's Hall Orchestra".
In 1893 Newman had became the first manager of the Queen's Hall and had the idea for a series of concerts at the Hall. Affordable prices for a mass audience with a designated space without seats so some of the audience could 'promenade'.
The series was known as 'Newman's Promenade Concerts'
