Pillars of the Community - Project 50/50 (Week 31)

View on black

Michigan Central Station is one of the most iconic structures in Detroit. It is in a very sad state of disrepair and its future remains uncertain. Recently, there has been some renewed interest in renovating this structure - but the unfortunate politics of Detroit and the realities of the costs involved may prove too much to overcome.

These columns are part of the main entrance to the building. Hopefully someday the gates are once again open to the public.

Some interesting facts about this building include:

- Built in 1913 at a cost of $15 million USD

- Appears in several films such as Transformers (2006)

- Prominent role in Eminem's music videos, espcially "8-Mile" and "Beutiful".

- The building is of the Beaux-Arts Classical style of architecture, designed by the Warren & Wetmore and Reed and Stem firms who also designed New York City's Grand Central Terminal.

- It's about 500,000 square feet

- The main waiting room on the main floor was modeled after an ancient Roman bathhouse with walls of marble and vaulted ceilings
