If you are staying in Dubai, one alternative to higher priced hotels near the main attractions is the "Dubai Creek" area.
This is close to the spice and garment markets, within walking distance of the Gold Souk and is an easy cab ride to the major attractions like Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall.
I really enjoyed taking the water taxi for some of my shorter trips. It was less than 1 Dhram to go almost anywhere you'd like along the creek.
I shot this with an 15-85mm lens on a Canon 7d.
