FBOweb, design

Google earth reaches a 3rd dimension, with a live flight tracking website. W2 code a homepage and create a visual style for the technologically driven site.

Fbo web is an innovative website that provides aircraft flight tracking and aviation flight related information. The site gives the user the ability to track an aircraft by displaying the flight's position on a map, as well as other information, such as altitude, speed, origin and final destination. Possibly the most interesting is our clients ability to integrate the flight tracking data with Google Earth, which allows user to view the flight's progress in a 3D, pan-and-zoom environment. This feature has been showcased on CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC.

We were asked to redesign and develop a single page of the site with the ability to track individual flights; and to showcase the 3D integration by providing a special feature which displays the inbound and outbound traffic for 7 major airports in the United States through Google Earth; and to provide links to other products and services offered by the website.

Another feature of the site is to display incident reports for major air traffic carriers, providing source information and an excellent "go-to" source for seeing the raw flight path for aircraft involved in aviation accidents.

We were required to redesign the page from the banner down, the page was also required to a advertising space and revenue through google ads. Another requirement was to create visual impact without using lots of graphic elements and images clogging up the download time of the site.

The visual design we took creative inspiration from the current site branding and applied it to the features of the page. We felt this site not only would be used by general public tracking loved ones but by tech savvy flight enthusiasts wanting the most up to date information and features. For this we included lots of live RSS feed update subscriptions, and for those not so savvy lots of reminders on how to get the google software to view the flights.

For this site to work we came up with clean simple design that maximised the technology and information space available. Whilst providing advertising space but not forcing in the viewers face so that it becomes a burden, it merely ads to the aesthetic feel of the site.
