Catacombs of Paris

About 65 feet under Paris, a maze of damp, dimly lit tunnels in old stone mines hold the remains of over six million people. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the city's cemeteries were running out of space. Also, improper burial techniques lead to ground water and land near the cemeteries becoming contaminated and spreading disease. City officials decided to condemn all cemeteries within city limits and move the bodies elsewhere. It was decided that the remains be moved into underground stone quarries.

The staggering amount of bodies in the catacombs really can't be understood unless you're there. It was one of the most macabre experiences I've had.
