Vishukkani at my home
Vishu signifies the Sun's transit to the zodiac - Mesha Raasi (first zodiac sign) as per Indian astrological calculations and astronomically represents the vernal equinox. The word ‘Vishu’ in Sanskrit means ‘equal’ and thus Vishu might denote one of the equinox days.
The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani- the first thing seen on the day of Vishu after waking up. People burst crackers and children have a merry time as it is summer vacation time. Both young and old meet elderly people to get vishukkaineettom (token amount given as gift). As usual the celebration culminates with sadhya (feast) in each home made mostly with the vegetables, pulses and fruits kept for vishukkani.
