Breakfast assembly at the flag pole for the morning flag raising and bugle call.

1974 - Breakfast flag raising by the old dining hall. I can smell the coffee and bacon now! What a great start to our day! The first two staff member L to R are Steve Welter and Joey Reinovsky (on crutches). Flag raisers are Joel Fox (L) ? (M) and Hal Jones (R).

Note all the dining hall "grubbies" standing by the window in the dining hall. Each table supplied one scout to be a grubby for 3 meals, so everyone at the table had a chance to serve others during the week. In those days we ate "family style," meaning that the grubbies placed the whole meal on each table. Nowadays, the food is served cafeteria style with long lines. With family style, everyone began eating at the same time and everyone finished eating at the same time. However, with cafeteria style today, diners finish in waves. Some are finished eating just as others are getting their food in line. I much prefer the family style gathering.

I remember back in about 1967 and 68 when Paul Smith used to run the dining hall like an Army sergeant. He was like a big Teddy Bear if you knew him and his great sense of humor, but he put the fear of fears into those boys when it came to keeping that dining hall spotless! Hopefully, some of those experiences passed on to their home lives later in life.
