Lee Bros Value World/Pay Less Drug - Castro Valley
Lee Bros was a Bay Area grocery chain. In the 1960s, they ventured into the burgeoning discount store business by opening Lee Bros Value World stores. These stores, like many discounts of the time, were combination grocery/discount stores. The Castro Valley, CA store at 3848 Castro Valley Blvd opened in 1964. This division (as well as the main grocery division) of Lee Bros began to falter shortly afterward, however. By the early 1970s, the entire Lee Bros chain had gone belly up. This location was taken over by Pay Less Drug in 1971. It might as well charge admission as a Pay Less museum at this point. Aside from a new stucco awning over the main entrance added in the late 1990s, Rite Aid hasn't put a cent into updating this store. Miraculously, the store hasn't even been downsized, as most of the sales floor remains stocked.
Old wrought-iron sign holders.
