SHINGERDAR: PAKISTAN: 28-December-2010.
A view from the roadside of Shingerdar Stupa near Barikot in Swat district of northern Pakistan. The plaque erected here tells that this stupa was identified by Colonel Deane and SA Stein with the famous Stupa built by King Uttarasena on the spot where the white elephant that carried the King share the Relics of the Buddha halted. When he had arrived at this spot the elephant suddenly dropped down and dying changed himself into a rock. By the side of this rock the King at once erected this Stupa. This definition of the Stupa is derived from a local who visited Swat in the 7th Century AD. The tradition is transmitted that the elephant reached this point with the relics of Buddha on its back.
