The Healing Buddha
Another plunder from my Photoshop 6 files on my old bubble iMac. This was a creative piece I did while taking a course in digital publishing and imaging. I used just about every Photoshop tool there is on this: Edge Glow, Lens Flare, Layering, Smudge tool, Copy Tool, Colour Adjusts, Curves and Masking.
The Healing Buddha, or Medicine Buddha, as he is more commonly known, is a major figure in the pantheon of Tibetan Buddhist practice. Repetition of his mantra and the attendant visualizations are said to bring about healing in the practitioner.
He and his "Pure Land" are described as being the colour of lapis lazuli, a stone once considered in the ancient world as having healing powers and magical applications. The Egyptians prized it more than gold. Deep, lapis, blue, the colour of healing, is also seen as being the colour for the very deepest aspect of our minds.
Beat poet Gary Snyder wrote an epic poem about the Medicine/Healing Buddha called "The Blue Sky" that is one of the most sublime poems I have ever read. It can be found in his book, "Mountains and Rivers without End."
This is not a traditional Tibetan thangka image but an artistic representation of the action of the Healing Buddha taking place as a parched, barren landscape is covered in healing blue waters then turned green in healing. May our world be similarly rejuvenated!
I present this Healing Buddha on New Years Eve as a way to wish all a very healthy, happy, fulfilling new year!
Music Link: David Sylvian & Robert Fripp - "Bringing Down the Light", from their album "The First Day".
