Valencia is the third largest city in Spain. Valencia is located on the Costa del Azahar on the Mediterranean Sea and is considered the birthplace of paella, one of the most famous dishes in Spanish cuisine. Valencia is also known as the orange city. Valencia is Spain's third economic engine, after Madrid and Barcelona. Valencia was founded in 138 BC. under the name Valentia Edetanorum, by a Roman leader. Valencia has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and very mild winters. Valencia, like the entire region of Valencia, is officially bilingual; they speak both Spanish and Valencian. Valencian is very closely related to Catalan. Spanish Valencia is more than beach and paella. The highlight that you do not want to miss are the modern buildings of Calatrava. The 'Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències' or 'the City of Arts and Sciences' is a cultural and scientific complex of seven special buildings designed by Calatrava and is located in the drained Turia River of Valencia. It includes Spain's finest aquarium L'Oceanographic, a planetarium, an IMAX theatre, a science museum and a striking event hall. This science park is definitely the number one attraction of Valencia! Santiago Calatrava created the beautiful L'Umbracle in the City of Arts and Sciences. The intention was that over time ivy could grow to the top of the arches, and this would create a shadow over the gardens, but the hot sun burned the ivy before it could reach the top and with it the idea of a shady city park was falling apart. Although L'Umbracle has not become the city park as they expected it to be, the designers have done their best to make the garden as beautiful as possible. Every plant and tree that grows here has been specially selected, with the characteristic that they change color every season.
The relaxed garden in the L'Umbracle takes up about half of it. The other half is used for parties. The garden consists of a long panoramic promenade, with a tree-lined garden, from which you have a wonderful view over Calatrava's complex as a whole. It was designed as an entrance to the City of Arts and Sciences. It is 320 meters long and 60 meters wide, located on the south side of the complex. It includes 55 fixed arches and 54 floating arches that are 18 meters high. The plants on display were carefully picked to change color with each season. The garden includes 99 palm trees, 78 small palm trees and 62 bitter orange trees. There are also 5,500 ground covers such as lotus, agate, Spanish flags and marigolds. There are over a hundred aromatic plants, including rosemary and lavender. It houses in its interior The Walk of the Sculptures, an open-air art gallery with sculptures by contemporary artists (Miquel de Navarre, Francesc Abbot, Yoko Ono and others)..

De 'Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències' oftewel 'de Stad van Kunst en Wetenschap' is een cultureel en wetenschappelijk complex van zeven bijzonder gebouwen ontworpen door Calatrava en is gelegen in de droog gelegde Turia rivier van Valencia. Het bevat o.a. het mooiste aquarium (L'Oceanographic) van Spanje, een planetarium, een IMAX-theater, een wetenschapsmuseum en een opvallende evenementenhal. Dit wetenschapspark is absoluut de nummer één bezienswaardigheid van Valencia! De relaxte tuin in het L’Umbracle beslaat ongeveer de helft. De andere helft wordt gebruikt voor feestjes. De tuin bestaat uit een lange panoramische promenade, met een met bomen omzoomde tuin, van waaruit u een prachtig uitzicht heeft over Calatrava's complex als geheel. De bedoeling was dat in de loop van de tijd klimop zou kunnen uitgroeien tot de top van de bogen, en dit zou een schaduw over de tuinen creëren, maar door de hete zon brandde de klimop voordat hij de top kon bereiken en daarmee het idee van een schaduwrijk stadspark viel uit elkaar. Hoewel L’Umbracle niet het stadspark is geworden zoals ze het hadden verwacht, hebben de ontwerpers hun best gedaan om de tuin zo mooi mogelijk te maken. Het is 320 meter lang en 60 meter breed, gelegen aan de zuidkant van het complex. Het omvat 55 vaste bogen en 54 drijvende bogen die 18 meter hoog zijn. De getoonde planten werden zorgvuldig geplukt om met elk seizoen van kleur te veranderen. De tuin omvat 99 palmbomen, 78 kleine palmbomen en 62 sinaasappelbomen. Er zijn ook 5.500 bodembedekkers zoals lotus, agaat, Spaanse vlaggen en goudsbloemen. Er zijn meer dan honderd aromatische planten, waaronder rozemarijn en lavendel. Het herbergt in zijn interieur The Walk of the Sculptures, een openluchtkunstgalerij met sculpturen van hedendaagse kunstenaars : Miquel de Navarre, Francesc Abbot, Yoko Ono en anderen.
