Wat Mahathat Temple of the Great Relics is located almost right in the center of Ayutthaya. Apart from being the symbolic center where the Buddha's relics were enshrined, Wat Mahathat was also the residence of the leader of the Thai Buddhist monks. The temple is believed to be built during the 14th century A.D. the early Ayutthaya period. Across the road we found Wat Mahathat, home to Ayutthaya's most famous image, the Buddha in the tree. Buddha head entwined by the root system of a fig tree Ficus religiosa. Like Indiana Jones we knew what we were looking for, it just took a while to find it! After a good deal of walking around and a fair amount of "we're not leaving until we find the flaming thing", we stumbled across the iconic tree not 100m from the entrance in the dark shadow of the big fig tree. The Buddha head made of stone is engulfed by a huge tree, whose roots have spent hundreds of years growing round it. We were understandably not allowed to get near enough to touch it, but quite close. The temple has been dated to the 14th Century so we can make a guess at how old the tree and Buddha are. I keep wondering what life must have been like when the tree first started growing.

Wat Mahathat is een oude indrukwekkende ruïne tempel waar een Buddha hoofd tussen de wortels van een boom zit gestrengeld. De Boeddha hoofd is ingeklemd tussen de wortels van een vijgenboom en is ook op alle PR-posters van Ayutthaya te bewonderen. Het was even zoeken net zoals bij Indiana Jones maar uiteindelijk toch gevonden, 100m van de ingang bij een grote vijgenboom in de donkere schaduw. De tempel uit de veertiende eeuw is opgenomen in de UNESCO wereld heritage lijst. Wat Phra Mahathat stamt uit de 14e eeuw en is gebouwd tijdens de regering van koning Ramesuan. Het heeft een prachtige Khmerstijl toren en vooral het boeddha hoofd dat vergroeid is met de boom is prachtig. De historie houdt namelijk niet op buiten het tempelpark. Zelfs buiten het eiland staan eeuwenoude tempels die vast veel minder toeristen trekken en daardoor ongetwijfeld een bijzondere sfeer hebben.
