Bojnický zámok or Bojnice Castle, is a medieval castle in Bojnice, Slovakia. It is a Romantic castle with some original Gothic and Renaissance elements built in the 12th century. Bojnice Castle is one of the most visited castles in Slovakia, receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors every year and also being a popular filming stage for fantasy and fairy-tale movies. Bojnice Castle was first mentioned in written records in 1013. Originally built as a wooden fort, it was gradually replaced by stone, with the outer walls being shaped according to the uneven rocky terrain. Bojnice Museum is now part of the Slovak National Museum today. The castle is renowned for its attractions. Bojnice Castle is surrounded by the castle park featuring numerous species of trees. The park also contains the Bojnice Zoo, the oldest and one of the most visited zoos in Slovakia. The castle park continues in the form of a forest park in the Strážov Mountains.
The gem of Bojnice is the ”fairy-tale” Bojnický zámok Castle, one of the most visited and most beautiful castles not only in Slovakia, but also in central Europe. The Castle stands on a large travertine monticule on the site of medieval castle from the 11th century. In the past, the most famous Hungarian noble families owned it and the last of them was the family of Pálfi. The typical silhouette of the romantic image of medieval castle is enhanced by steep roofs of the palace, chapel and towers. Het kasteel van Bojnice neemt een dominante positie in deze streek in. Zeker de moeite waard is een rondleiding door het kasteelmuseum. Vooral de Gouden Zaal is indrukwekkend. De fundamenten van het kasteel dateren uit de 13e eeuw en enkele gedeelten van de muur uit de 14e eeuw gebouwd door de Hongaarse adel. In 1649 ging het kasteel over in handen van de Hongaarse familie Palffy. Zij vestigden de muren als bescherming tegen de Turkse invallen. Met uitzondering van een korte periode van bezetting door rebellen bleef het kasteel in handen van de Pálfi's. Pálfi stond bekend om zijn bouwdrift. Het ene kasteel was nog niet af of er werd alweer begonnen met het volgende. Hij was ook erg reislustig en was vooral onder de indruk van de Arabische wereld en Afrika. Zijn kastelen richtte hij in met voorwerpen die hij van zijn reizen meebracht. Zijn bouwdrift, reislust en verzamelwoede brachten hem in grote financiële problemen. Vandaar dat hij gedwongen werd een groot deel van zijn bezittingen te verkopen. In 1938 kwam het kasteel van Bojnice in handen van de Tsjechische schoenfabrikant Bata. In 1945 werd het geconfisqueerd door de staat. Het romantische kasteel is niet het enige wat Bojnice te bieden heeft. De dierentuin dat naast het kasteel is gelegen heeft jaarlijks vele bezoekers, vooral schoolkinderen. Een fotograaf zoekt de juiste compositie in het gras genietend van het uitzicht op het sprookachtige kasteel van Bojnice. Het is ook een prachtige picknick plek.
