Cap Blanc-Nez is accessible to both walkers and mountain bikers, it runs between dunes, beaches, heathland and cliffs, commanding grandiose views. Cap Blanc Nez Cape White Nose in English is a 151 -metre high cape nearby Calais in northern France. The cliffs of chalk are very similar to the white cliffs of Dover at the other side of the Channel in England. Just walk up to the top of the headland and stand facing the sea ...and get some good, rich sea air into your lungs! Then turn your gaze to the left and you’ll see Cap Gris Nez, the nearest point on mainland Europe to Great Britain. On top of Cap Blanc Nez is a memorial of the Navy Dover Patrol. This was a project that was jointly set up during the first world war by France and England. The goal was to free passage of shipping through the Channel. In the First World War it was under threat because the German troops had captured the Belgian port of Ostend and Zeebrugge. The Dover Patrol which kept the Channel free from U-boats during World War I.
Cap Blanc Nez are situated at the northwest coast of France near the Belgian border. These cliffs are ideal to go hiking in the wind, blow your sorrows away, have a pick nick and return home with a clear head; the perfect day trip! The walk on top of the cliffs offers impressive panoramas with the rocks and the sea down below. It’s also fun to walk on the beach so you’ll get a good view of the beautiful high cliffs. But be careful! Don’t lose the tides out of sight or you’ll get very wet. The concrete emplacements at Cap Blanc Nez are mainly a mixture of observation and personnel bunkers. Construction started during the Autumn of 1940 and it was declared operational in January 1942 during WWII. Due to the high cliffs is a good thing the allies have not landed here, but chose Normandy.
Cap Blanc-Nez is de meest indrukwekkende van de twee kapen. Met een hoogte van 151 meter is hij een stuk hoger dan Cap Gris-Nez en ook vanaf het strand zijn de krijtrotsen een stuk indrukwekkender. De kaap is trouwens bijzonder geliefd bij geologen en liefhebbers van fossielen. De voet van de krijtrotsen is dan ook een goede vindplaats van fossielen uit het Krijt. Je kan de kaap bezoeken vanaf de parking bovenop de kaap. je kan beter je wagen achter laten in het dorpje Escalles. Op de doodlopende weg naar het strand zijn heel wat parkeerplaatsen en vandaaruit omhoog te wandelen tot bovenop de kaap. Op de wandeling zie je verschillende bunkers uit de WOII. Bovenop Cap Blanc Nez staat de naald, een herdenkingsmonument voor de Dover Patrol. Dit was een project dat tijdens de eerste wereldoorlog gezamelijk werd opgezet door Frankrijk en Engeland. Het doel was om de vrije doorgang van de scheepvaart in het Kanaal te vrijwaren. In de eerste wereldoorlog was deze immers bedreigd omdat de Duitse troepen de Belgische havens Oostende en Zeebrugge hadden veroverd. Op het strand kan je verdedigingswerken zien van de Atlantik-wall uit de WOII. De bouw van de bunkers begonnen in het najaar van 1940 en het werden operationeel verklaard in januari 1942 tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Vanwege de hoge kliffen is het een goede zaak dat de geallieerden niet hier geland zijn, maar gekozen hadden voor Normandië.
