Kenya 1992
I was a 22-year-old airman escorting reporters from L.A. and San Diego to cover Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. We actually slept in Mombasa, Kenya, and flew into various Somali cities and towns each day aboard American and British C-130s (shown in the background). It was a stark contrast -- the luxurious Kenyan resort where we ate dinner, danced to live reggae and pop bands, and slept in comfortable beds, and the filthy, disease and conflict ridden villages where we met the suffering Somalis.
