Gazal [Stranger #20]

This picture is #20 in the 100 Strangers Project - Round 3

Was visiting family in Mumbai, India for a short vacation last month. The incessant but necessary rains really dampened a lot of plans making general travel within the city challenging - especially with the traffic. But still had the odd opportunity to walk around seeking strangers for the project. The next few encounters are, in no particular order, from my Mumbai days.

Meet Gazal

Hanging out at Bandra, Mumbai has definitely been a good choice for the project - especially hanging out near Starbucks (credit due to wife for the suggestion). Had met Khushi (posted few days back) and before that I was lucky to meet Gazal at my first visit there.Noticed this wonderful lady working on her laptop as I sat reading and sipping some coffee few tables away. Despite the light outside not at its best, I knew Gazal would make a great subject. She definitely had a very strong yet pleasant personality with eyes that conveyed determination and strength. I approached her when I saw relaxing for few minutes and made my request.

Gazal was a little surprised which is quite natural, but after a little bit of a chat sitting at her table she warmed up to the idea. In the meanwhile we had a friendly conversation getting to know a little about her. Gazal is in fact a celebrity - she is a upcoming Bollywood script and dialogue writer with credits for few wonderful movies in recent times. Those familiar with Hindi movies would recognize Ek Ladki Ko Deka, Wazir, Lipstick under my Burkha - unconventional movies breaking the typical hindi movies mold. Since movies is something I absolutely love it was nice to chat with someone associated with films. Also had a few more questions for her. What was her favorite quality about herself - she's a good listener which actually is an asset I'd think for her stories. And what are her hobbies - I just love to sleep when I get a chance she admitted honestly.

We stepped and I tried to use some open shade despite the midday sun - it was really have a subject like Gazal who was so humble and cooperative despite her celebrity status, following instructions and staying engaged. Once I got home I did look up my subject - realized that in fact was a well known personality and was honestly surprised to realize she was a trans-woman- nothing about her fit the stereotypes we see and hear. Since she didn't really bring up that aspect of her life, wont delve too much into it. However reading about it only increased my admiration for Gazal - amazing journey and kudos for all that she has reached for and achieved. To know a little more about this wonderful personality you can look up Gazal Dhaliwal or read
