In the sweet summertime
I'm a bit weary of winter these days and looking back at pictures such as this one from 2004 only make it worse. Here a westbound BNSF freight traces the placid waters of Lake Pepin near Maiden Rock, WI. I drove this road every week in those days and this spot has a very short window of opportunity each year. The sun still swings to the north side of the tracks before setting yet not too far north so that the tall bluffs at my back shadow the mainline. Apart from the sun angle this small clearing in the trees only lasts a few minutes before the tree shadows overtake it. BNSF 5404 threads the needle on August 13, 2004.
