A SAD Blue Heron Shot
This is an unfortunate image.
Several of us were out photographing this morning...and spotted this GBH across the lake, partially hidden in its normal ground location. Too far to photograph, I went around to flush the Blue Heron so it would fly out towards the others. That worked great, and I still managed to grab some shots.
Processing them gave me an unhappy surprise. As you can see in the photo, this Blue Heron has lost both of its feet. I'm certain this is the bird I stalked all last summer and fall...and it was fine then. We don't have alligators, or other predators which could have done this. I have to assume -- sadly -- that this Heron actuall got frozen into the water somewhere, and lost its feet getting free.
Didn't seem to have any problem on the ground, but I'm not sure how it will be able to perch up at the top of tall trees. ** SAD **
